Obituary

Mom, Mrs. Jessie James Horton, was born on June 1, 1929—a tumultuous time just prior to the stock market crash (October 24-29, 1929), the commencement of the Great Depression. She witnessed the truthfulness of Psalms 126:15 which says, “those sowing seed with tears will reap even with a joyful cry.” Life was not easy for mom, yet she prevailed.

She graduated high school then at age 21 she married Mr. Percy Lee Horton, Sr. who preceded her in death. Into this union eight children were born: Bettye Peeples, Lelia Mitchell, Juanita Bailey, Linda Simon (Rick), Percy Horton, Jr. (deceased), Carl Horton, Celisa Gaiters and TaBrena Horton. By these eight Mom was blessed with a host of grand, great-grand, and great great grandchildren and a host of relatives and friends. This reminds us of the scripture that says: “He (Jehovah) counts the number of the stars; He calls all of them by name.” (Psalm 147:4) Likewise, each grand was precious in her sight. So precious, that she remembered each one of their birthdates. When we couldn’t remember them, we called her!

Having accepted Christ as her Lord and Savior, she and her children served God at Grant Chapel A.M.E. Church of Calera, Alabama in the sixties.  She served as President of the Stewardess Board for 30 years and Church School Superintendent for 25 years.  She also served in the Church choir and Lay Organization.  Mom served on the Women’s Missionary Society for 50 years serving in the capacity of secretary, worship leader and most recent parliamentarian.  She has a scholarship of academic excellence partly named in her honor. She loved her Church family and was loyal to the end. Her grandchildren brought added joy as they actively and progressively served God alongside their parents.

Mom always embraced her role as the family Matriarch. Though small in stature, she wielded a big voice and a strong hand not shying away from administering discipline when needed. We all experienced her obedience to God’s word as recorded at Proverbs 23:13: “Do not withhold correction from a child. If you beat him with a rod, he will not die. You shall beat him with a rod and deliver his soul.”

We so enjoyed time spent with mom. She was a devoted Mom who loved dancing, singing and playing around with us. Seeing us happy was the joy of her life. She was an excellent cook who prepared delicious meals and treats. We will always delight in trying to duplicate the wonderful flavors she developed in her foods.

Along with joy comes sorrow. Through the years, Mom lost several loved ones. These included her only sister, Ms. Mary James who passed away in the eighties leaving behind two very young adults, Bobby Mahaffey and Brenda James Smith. A few years later she lost her dear Mom, Mrs. Lelia James Nettles. She lost two grandsons, DeWayne Horton and her eldest grandson, Alando King. She also lost two nephews, Lance James and Bobby Mahaffey, Jr.  On Friday, November 9, 2018 Mom joined those who preceded her in death.

We look forward to seeing all of them, for God has promised: “There will be a resurrection of the dead, both the just and the unjust.” (Acts 24:15). We look forward to that day when we will see our dear loved ones again!

A celebration of Life will be held Saturday, Nov. 17, 2018 at 12:00 Noon at Grant Chapel A.M.E. Church in Calera with burial at Shelby Memory Gardens.
