Deacon Fred H. Underwood's Obituary

Deacon Fred H. Underwood , lovingly known to his grandchildren as "Gramps" was born September 13, 1938, to the late Fred & Elizabeth Underwood in Shelby, AL.

He confessed Christ at an early age & joined The Union Baptist Church of Columbiana, AL. In 1964 he joined The Providence Baptist Church in Shelby, AL, where he married the late Earldine P. Underwood on July 18, 1964. He served as a Deacon and was Chairman of the Deacon board for one year, he also sang in the Senior Choir, was a member of the Saint Peter's Lodge No. 146, and a member of the Elberta Chapter No. 56 of the Eastern Stars, where he served as patron.

He graduated from The Shelby County Training School in 1958, where he was a point guard and an awesome basketball player.

Deacon Underwood was employed by Sims Co. for 25 years, Elastic Inc. for 4 years & Citation Foam from where he retired after 6 years. He was preceded in death by his daughter, Gwendolyn P. Watson & his son, Gregory Pope.

He leaves to cherish his memories: a son, Harold E. Underwood of Columbiana, AL; a daughter, Karen L. Underwood of Columbiana, AL; a sister Elsie Varner of Akron, OH; a brother, Edward (Betty) Underwood of Columbiana, AL; two sisters in law, Johnnie P. Walker of Atlanta, GA, Margaret A. Pope of Calera, AL; three grandchildren, Jalen E. Mahan of Alpine, AL, Kesha Watts of Birmingham, AL, Ashley Watson of Birmingham, AL; seven great grandchildren; a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, family & friends.

Viewing and Visitation will be held Friday, October 4, 2024 from 4:00 P.M. – 6:00 P.M.

Celebration of Life will be held Saturday, October 5, 2024 at 12:00 Noon at Providence Baptist Church in Shelby, AL with interment at Providence Community Cemetery.
