She confessed Christ at an early age and joined Carlton Hill Missionary Baptist Church (Brierfield, AL). Dorothy later became a member for many years at Rehobeth Baptist Church. In 2002, Dorothy returned back to her family home church, Carlton Hill Missionary Baptist Church. She was a very active member of the church and known to everyone simply as "Sister Smith". During her membership there, she served as a secretary, treasurer and head kitchen coordinator, until God called her home.

Dorothy attended the H.D. Davidson High School in Centreville, AL. She was a matron of the Eastern Star - Moore's Chapter 499 Brierfield for many years. She was employed at the University of Montevallo Dining Hall for well over twenty years. Dorothy was known for her hospitality, laughter and witty sense of humor.
