Eddie Newton Lumpkin's Obituary

Eddie Newton Lumpkin (73), born December 5th, 1949, met His Savior, Jesus, face to face on January 7th, 2023. He is whole and healed, reflecting the image of Jesus.

Eddie is survived by his wife of 49 years, Sarah (Carroll) Lumpkin. He is also survived by his son Jamie (Catie), his daughter Julie Sasse (Nathan), and his mother, Jettie Ruth Lumpkin. He additionally leaves a legacy of eight grandchildren: Caleb (19), Benjamin (17), Daniel (15), Bentley Hope (11), Ayla Joy (9), Joshua (8), Samantha Joy (6), and Isaac (5). He is preceded in death by his father, Columbus Corthell "Buster" Lumpkin. He is cherished by numerous cousins and extended family members who have been impacted by his life.

As a native of Gadsden, Alabama, Eddie developed a love for, and talent in sports, particularly basketball. His talent matured when he attended the University of Alabama and played for the Alabama Crimson Tide basketball team. His tenure at the University secured his love for the Crimson Tide as one of the great loves of his life. However, it also planted a desire in him to coach, serve and help grow young athletes.

Eddie entered the Army Reserves in 1971 during the Vietnam War. He continued to serve his country through the Gulf War and the War on Terror, modeling a character of dignity and faithfulness to his family and those around him. In 2005, Eddie retired from the United States Army as a Full Bird Colonel and Deputy Surgeon of the United States of America.

Eddie was a member of Briarwood Presbyterian Church in Birmingham, AL, where he established lifelong friends and community.

Celebration of life arrangements are as follows: Family and friend visitation at 11 AM, January 12th at The Good Shepherd Funeral Home (150 White Street, Montevallo, AL, 35115).  Celebration of life service will follow at noon. Burial service will be at 1:15 PM, at Alabama National Cemetery with Full Military Honors. (3133 Highway 119, Montevallo, AL, 35115).

In lieu of flowers, please consider donations to the Evangel Christian School Athletics Scholarship Fund (evangellightning.org) or the Briarwood Christian School Athlete Scholarship Fund (DWahlman@bcsk12.org) where the grandchildren he taught to throw a baseball have been coached by men of God, as was his passion and aim.
