Edmund Roosevelt Cunningham was born on September 10, 1933, in Shelby County, Alabama, to William McKinley Cunningham, Sr. and Janie Moore Cunningham.

He was preceded in death by his parents and two of his children, Valerie Cunningham Morris and Edmund Roosevelt Cunningham, Jr. ("Eddy"):

He peacefully departed this life on Thursday, July 23, 2026, at the age of 92.

He was united in marriage to Mrs. Earnestine Kidd Cunningham, whose unwavering love and devoted care sustained him through life's joys and challenges, in sickness and in health.

He dearly loved his eldest daughter, Rose Mary Inabinette.

One of his greatest blessings was knowing and loving each of his grandchildren, all of whom held a special place in his heart.

At an early age, Sam accepted Jesus Christ as his Lord and Savior and was baptized. At the age of eight, he united with Shiloh Baptist Church, where he remained steadfast in his faith.

Sam worked as a barber for many years and was a master carpenter by trade. He attended Nunnelly Technical College, where he studied brick masonry. His love of music led him to further his education in New York, where he attended music school to refine his skills as a saxophonist. He brought joy to family, friends, and all who listened to the beautiful music he shared.

In 1953, Sam proudly answered the call to serve his country in the United States Army:

He was a devoted member of Stone Mountain Lodge #187, where he treasured the fellowship of his Masonic brothers and counted them among his dearest friends.

He leaves to mourn his passing and cherish his memory his devoted wife, Mrs. Earnestine Kidd Cunningham; his beloved daughter, Rose Mary Inabinette; his grandchildren; and a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives, and friends.

Sam will be remembered for his unshakable faith, quiet strength, generous spirit, skilled hands, and the joy he brought to others through music.
