Georgia Mae
(Jenkins) Jenkins-Chappell
August 9, 1918 – March 31, 2018
Mrs. Georgia Mae Jenkins Chappell
was born to Alex Jenkins, Sr. and Isabella Mae Moore Jenkins on August 9, 1918 in Talladega, AL. When she was 8 years old she moved to Brierfield, AL and was raised by her uncle and aunt, Tom and Janie Payton. She accepted Christ at age 16 and joined Carlton Hill Baptist Church where she served faithfully for several years.
She attended elementary school in Bibb County up to the 6 th grade which was the highest grade in that school. Georgia's mother wanted her to finish high school so she sent her to live with her uncle and aunt in Montevallo, Will and Janie Cunningham, so that she could attend Shelby County Training School. She attended this school up to the 11 th grade when she met and married Johnny Chappell in 1940. To this union six children were born. Her mother-in-law, Carrie Chappell, encouraged her to go back to school for one more year to get a high school diploma. She went back to school after her fourth child turned three years old and graduated from Bibb County Training School in 1949 at the age of 34. She worked as a substitute teacher in Brierfield and Six Mile for many years. Additionally, she worked as a local income tax preparer, poll worker, farmer's wife, maid and baby sitter.
After her marriage, she joined Waymon Chapel A.M.E. Church and served there untiringly for many years as the church clerk and Missionary Society President. Waymon Chapel honored her with a special tribute program for her outstanding service as Missionary Society President for 50 years. She attended many A.M.E. annual conferences in Opelika and Phoenix City, AL as a delegate.
Her hobbies were cooking and serving food to others at her church and at her home. Georgia had a loving, giving spirit but she had a special love for preachers. She pampered them and did not allow anyone to talk about her preachers. She was witty and feisty and told it.
She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, two siblings, Anna E. Junious and Alex Jenkins, Jr., oldest daughter, Johnnie Mae Edwards and granddaughter, Mary DeVaughn Carter.
Survivors who will remember her with love and fondly cherish memories of her include: five children: Alma D. Carter and James F. Chappell, Flint, MI, Bernice (Rev. Jonas) Rutledge, Auburn, AL, Robert (Susan) Cha;;ell, Montgomery, AL; Johnny, Jr. (Beverly) Chappell, Brierfield, AL, and one adopted daughter, Tina (Rev. Michael) James, West Blocton, AL; 28 grandchildren, 28 great-grandchildren, 15 great-great-grandchildren; many nieces, nephews cousins and friends.
