Hammett Lilly was born to the parentage of the late Lawrence Lilly and Sarah Lilly, on June 15, 1906, in Dogwood of Shelby County, Alabama. He made his triumphant entrance into glory on February 5, 2017.
Early in life, Hammett and his parents moved to Brierfield, AL. There, he accepted Christ at an early age and became a member of Carlton Hill Baptist Church in Brierfield. He served on the Usher Board and later became the President. Hammett was also a member of Prince Hall Masonry Stone Mountain Lodge #187.
Hammett received his early education in Brierfield, AL. After which, he worked as a coal miner for 10 years. He later became employed by Westinghouse Corporation where he worked for 35 years.
Hammett was a loving and devout husband to Vaida M. Lilly, his wife of 57 years. He was known in the community as Uncle Buck or Mr. Buck. In his leisure, he loved fishing, hunting, gardening, and baseball. His favorite teams were the Dallas Cowboys and Atlanta Braves. Hammett was an avid reader, and he enjoyed reading the daily newspaper.
Hammett was preceded in death by his wife, Vaida M. Lilly; parents, Lawrence and Sarah Lilly; three sisters, Claudine Curry, Espy Hill, and Julia Hill, and four brothers; Alex Lilly, Zeddie, Lilly, Coleman Lilly, and Matthew Lilly.
He leaves to cherish his beautiful memories: one son, Dennis (Debra) Lilly of Helena, Al; one brother, John Lilly of Alliance, Ohio; four grandchildren, Meredith Lilly of Atlanta, GA, Paige Lilly of Homewood, AL, Katherine Lilly of Atlanta, GA, and Chris Smith of Houston, TX; five great-grandchildren; and a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives and dear friends who shall cherish his memories. Homegoing Celebration will be held Saturday Feb. 11, 2017 at 12;00 Noon at Shiloh Missionary Baptist Church in Montevallo with burial at Montevallo City Cemetery.
