Junnie Mae
(Williams) Craig
September 17, 1928 – October 31, 2017
Junnie Mae Craig, affectionately called "Junnie Mae" was born to Lillar Mae Salter Nunn on September 17, 1928. She went home to be with the Lord on October 31, 2017. Junnie Mae was preceded in death by her husband, Pastor George D. Craig and mother, Lillar Mae Salter Nunn.
She is survived by a son, William Craig, Columbus, Ohio, a daughter, Patricia Watford (Elverie), Columbus, Ohio, five grandchildren: Nichole Thompson (Robert), Montgomery, Alabama, Michael Craig (Whitney), New York, New York, Kristi Moses (LeDon), Dallas, Texas, John Paul Craig, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, Felicia Craig, Dallas, Texas, and four great-grandchildren, devoted cousins and close friends. Junnie Mae spent her early years in Luverne, Alabama, and later moved to Shelby County, Alabama, where she would meet a young Pastor, George D. Craig. In 1962, they married and began their life together, which included rearing three children: William, Eddie and Patricia.
Junnie Mae began her work in the Kingdom at an early age, serving diligently in various capacities within the Church. She considered it an honor to labor for the Lord. She served with distinction and nobility as the First Lady of Mt. Gilead (Montgomery, AL) and 46th Street Baptist Church (Birmingham, AL) for over 40 years. She was always proud of her membership at Shiloh Missionary Baptist Church, where she remained until her death. Junnie Mae strongly believed that education was the great equalizer, and despite your back-ground, ethnicity, economic or social status, education evened the playing field for every-one. But even more significant, she knew and understood that education was the means by which God's destiny and purpose enhanced our lives. In short, Junnie Mae knew, education was empowering and imbued each of us with a sense of self-worth. So it was not by coincidence that she received a Bachelor of Arts degree from Alabama Agriculture and Mechanical College in 1949. She would later complete a Master's degree from the University of Montevallo, Alabama. For more than 40 years, she was an intricate part of the lives of the children in Shelby County, as an educator. Junnie Mae also believed that serving others was also serving God's kingdom. She not only joined multiple organizations, too many to count, but closest to her heart was her beloved Top Ladies of Distinction, Inc., and Gamma Phi Delta Sorority, Inc. Every organization she was a part of, she was a tireless, dedicated worker, who did not broker laziness. She was probably most proud of her work with young women. Always believing that youth were the life blood of any community, and those ahead had a God given duty to reach back to guide and nurture as many as could be reached. So it was not unusual to see her encouraging and instructing young women. Junnie Mae led by example. She was strong willed, caring and dedicated. God has surely returned an Angel to heaven.
