Lorenza Burke's Obituary

Lorenza Burke was born in Birmingham, Alabama. Shortly after, his family migrated to Chicago, Illinois, where he spent most of his youth. He enlisted in the army two months before turning 18 and served in Germany and Vietnam. Upon returning, Burke pursued various careers, ranging from mortician to private investigator. He was even a backup drummer for The Drifters. Ultimately, he found employment at Washtenaw Community College, where he also attended classes and met his wife, Oppia. He and Oppia, affectionately called Ren, were married in Ypsilanti, Michigan. Burke worked at GM Hydra-Matic as a Certified Heavy Duty Mechanic. He later transferred with GM Hydra-Matic to Madison, Alabama to be closer to family. Burke went on to work on major projects at Saginaw Steering and the Tombigbee River, but a workplace injury while working on cars forced him to stop working altogether.

In his leisure time, Burke enjoyed fishing on the banks of the Tennessee River, his favorite pastime. He was also skilled in playing the guitar and working on cars, but fishing remained his greatest passion. He had a deep love for music, so much so that he instilled in his children the importance of listening to and analyzing music. He was tapping his feet to music all the way til his final hours.

Lorenza resided in the Colonel Robert L. Howard Veterans Home in Pell City, where he was one of the inaugural residents—becoming the 24th resident. He took pride in being part of the community and cherished the staff who assisted him during his time there, reciprocating their affection.
