St Elmo
Rutland

St Elmo Rutland was born November 15, 1929 in Wildsville, Lousiana. He was the ninth of ten children to live from a total of 13 children born to Eric Ezell Spenser Rutland and Kate Washington Rutland. St. Elmore was the youngest boy. St. Elmo Rutland accepted Christ at an early age and was a member of Mt. Zion Baptist Church in Athlone, Louisiana. He was baptized as a teenager in the Tensaw River by Pastor JW Hampton. St. Elmo later joined with Elizabeth Baptist Church under the direction of Pastor Fred Hall. After relocating to Memphis area in 2008, he joined the Healing Cathedral Christian Church under the direction of Pastor Tyrone Hunt.St. Elmo enjoyed gardening well into his eighties and would spend hours working his crop. Before there was "Urban Farming," St. Elmo purchased and worked his plot of land in Cleveland, Ohio during the late seventies and early eighties. St. Elmo Rutland was extremely smart and performed well in school, especially mathematics. St. Elmo ran a successful tax business for almost 40 years. He was the first African American trained by H&R Bloxk and ran his tax franchise out of his home with over 300 customers. St. Elmo owned several pieces of property in Cleveland. His biggest property had a total of nine units. He held on to that property from 1971 until the late nineties, believing Cleveland Clinic Would expand and one day purchase his property. St. Elmo eventually sold the building to Cleveland Clinic in hte late nineties. St. Elmo graduated from Catahoula Parish Training School for the Colored in 1947. He enlisted in the United States Air Force (USAF) IN 1948, which was the same year the military desegregated. He served in Guam, Japan, and fought in the Korean War. He served four years and was honorably discharged. St. Elmo retired from the United States Postal Service in Cleveland, Ohio after 38 years of service. He served as a mail carrier and retired as a time keeper, now known as a payroll specialist. St. Elmo united in marriage to Camilla Bell Henry in 1954 in Oakland, California. She preceded him in death. Four children were born to this union. Their first born child, Doretha, preceded them both in death. St. Elmo gained his wings and was promoted to the Celestial city on Monday, January 16, 2017. The great physician, through His divine will, said to him "Come to me, ye who are weary and heavy laden, and I will give you rest." In his home going he leaves two sons and one daughter: Aubrey Glen Rutland (Threatha), Gregory Allan Rutland (Merit) and Rhonda Kay Doss (Larry); nine grand children and other relatives.
