Mr. Jruby Cathey, 85, entered in eternal rest at home on September 27, 2023. He was born April 14, 1938, in Wilsonville, AL.
Jruby was born to Samuel and Ola Cathey, who lovingly nurtured him in his early years. He was joined in a lifelong journey of love and companionship with his late wife, Shirley Ann Cathey. He was a beloved father to four children, including Jruby Cathey Jr., Sharral Cathey Keith, Phebea (Eugene) Hall, and a daughter, who preceded him in death, Sharren Cathey Moore. Eva Lilly, whom he lovingly adopted, also held a special place in his heart.
He also preceded in death by a host of loved to welcome him home: father, Samuel Cathey; mother, Ola Wilson Cathey; wife, Shirley Ann Cathey; brothers: Lester Cathey, David Cathey, Benjamin Cathey, Desi Cathey, James E. Cathey; and sisters, Willie Ree McCary and Elizabeth Cathey. Jruby has three surviving siblings: Jewel Peoples, Linda Brown, and Frank Cathey.
Jruby dedicated a significant portion of his life to his work. He spent 32 years at Blue Circle Cement, where his dedication and hard work left a lasting impact. He devoted a decade of his life to Holcombe Building Supply, where he honed his skills and developed lifelong friendships. Later in his career, he contributed his service to the City of Montevallo, until his retirement in 2022.
He is survived by eight loving grandchildren, each carrying forward his legacy of love and family: Kenneth Cathey, Micheal Cathey, Jruby Catheylll, Jalen Cathey, Cliffton Taylor lV, Rebbie Taylor-Jones, Roger Moore, and Sherrel Keith. In addition to his immediate family, Jruby had a special connection with his two nephews, David Nunn and Thomas Wilson Jr., whom he loved and cared for as his own grandchildren. He also had a special bond with his nephew, Jerry Smith, who brought joy, meaning, and a helping hand to his life. Beyond his professional accomplishments, Jruby was known for his warm and caring nature. He had a passion for people and good conversation. He cherished moments with his grandchildren and great grandchildren. A host of nieces, nephews, family and friends, as well as his beloved community of Montevallo. His wisdom, guidance, and love will be deeply missed by all who had the privilege of knowing him. Jruby Cathey's legacy of hard work, devotion to family, and kind-hearted spirit will live on in the hearts of those he leaves behind.
Viewing will be held Friday, Oct. 6, 2023, from 4:00 P.M. - 6:00 P.M. at The Good Shepherd.
A Celebration of Life will be held Saturday, Oct. 7, 2023, at 12:00 Noon at Shiloh Missionary Baptist Church in Montevallo with interment at Montevallo Cemetery.
